stabbing westward [Wanderlust]

A few small facts:

  1. I have taken a job at a scrappy little web startup called Google.

  2. The job is in Mountain View, CA. My start date is February 21st. This seems nearly inconceivable, but is true regardless.

  3. I am, as a result, in need of a short-term living situation in San Francisco until Miranda can join me out there. If you know anyone in need of a roommate between now and (most likely) June 1st, now would be a great time to tell me.

  4. Contrariwise, if you know anyone who would like to sublet a gorgeous pre-war 2BR-plus-dining-room in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan for around $1600/month, pets welcome, probably available around May 1st (but this is negotiable), please drop me a line.

  5. Once I get to SF, I will probably also need, god help me, a car. If not immediately, then certainly very soon. I may well just break down and buy a Prius, but if anyone has leads on a reliable used vehicle, I'd certainly appreciate them.

  6. I'm having a going-away party on 2/11. If you haven't gotten an invite, it's not because I don't love you, but because I'm a spaz. Let me know.

  7. This flash video is incredibly amusing, and I cannot stop watching it.

That is all for now.

You must look up my high school best friend stresskitten there. I think you'd get along.
Heh, she knows wookiepocket and uke -- I'll undoubtely cross her path sooner rather than later.
Though the circumstances are aces, your departure sucks senior citizen cock.

Had a great time last night. Looking forward to Taking California.
good luck in CA! we'll try to see you on this coast before you go ...

YESYESYESYESYES!!!!

my master plan is coming to fruition! soon all those i love and adore will be in california and we can officially secede from the union! hurrah! i mean...uh...congrats!

Re: YESYESYESYESYES!!!!

Muah hah hah hah hah!

(Does this mean we might actually manage to see each other in SF?)
This flash video is incredibly amusing, and I cannot stop watching it.

Niether. Can. He.
So you're saying I shouldn't give him the mp3 version?

I live in San Rafael
and need a roommate
(it's a 15 - 20 min dr from S.F)
North or south from SF? (Sorry, I am frightfully ignorant of the geography outside the SF city limits.)

Since I'm going to be working in Mountain View and at least initially won't have a car, something close to either Caltrain or Google's shuttles is highly preferable. But -- drop me a line, we can discuss details.
Wowsers, congratulations! You're the 3rd person I know there, now. Plus another 3 friends in the area, and a cousin.

Hope I'll still see ya at susboid stuff...
(Also, I know a couple someones who live out toward Mountainview, including susboid querldox. And I'd be really surprised if Google didn't have some sort of housing board.)
Are you working on the corporate or engineering side of google?
Systems Ops -- so "engineering for the corporate side"
I've asked pyrogenic and gatopreto if they've got any leads on sublets or rooms; even if not, they're both in San Francisco and worth knowing. (If you don't know them already, that is.)

As my boy's in western Mass and I'm in Philly, I'm looking for a NYC weekend love nest, but something more on the "hey, we have a spare bedroom and we like you, you can pay us in wine and groceries or minimal cash" sort of level, alas.

At any rate, I'll see you at your party!
(And it looks as though pyrogenic is a lead. . .)
Woah!! Holy smokies! Dang...I know so many NYC'ers heading out to SF. I'm seriously considering it myself...I don't know anyone who needs a roommate there at the top of my head, but I'll definitely put some feelers out for you.

Wow. But hey, I'll be out in SF in July, so we'll have to meet up then, since we never seem to have the chance here. Funny, that! : )

And congrats!
Well, in the next day or so, I'll be making a decision. One possible outcome involves me moving to SF in September or so. In which case, I'll look you up :)

I can't help you with housing on the left coast, but I'll keep my ears open for folks looking for a place to live in New York.

-Rek
Hey, California is totally the new New York.

Just sayin'.
congrats!

What does this mean for biresource.org? We should talk on the phone or chat in realtime. . .

Am I The Only One Who Can't Get Hired By Google?

This from the man who, last I saw him, was dismissive about the whole Mountain View lifestyle.

You're gonna work for the sysadm arm of Google, right? They seem to have their hiring act together.

Re: Am I The Only One Who Can't Get Hired By Google?

Who says I'm going to be living in Mountain View? :)

But yes... irony fully appreciated.

You're gonna work for the sysadm arm of Google, right? They seem to have their hiring act together.

Yup, and yup.
Congratulations on the new job!
Btw, the Prius is an awesome car. My dad lets me borrow his and it is just spiffy to drive.
(haven't gotten an invite)
Hey, I'd live in Mountain View. Lotsa good restaurants and a great used bookstore, and it's no more soulless than anywhere else in the area.
The big problem with the valley is that most of my friends in the bay area are in the city proper. I'd rather commute during the day and be able to hang out at night than vice versa.
Splittin' for the Coast, eh?

Regrettably, my job both requires that I live in Massachusetts, and doesn't quite pay enough to support a pied-a-terre in NYC.
I may attempt to make your party. I'm gonna miss you, dude!
Congratulations on the new job. And YOU UTTER BASTARD for that flash video.
Good Luck and safe trip my dear!!!

"things to keep in mind when moving to SF from Boston or NYC"
Heh, cool, thank you.

We get the Nathan now!

Until you get the Prius, there's always the Google bus.

Also: cute hotel in a sweet neighborhood very close to BART/MUNI (and thus, CalTrain, and then: Mountain View), which comes well-advised on Yelp (which is how I now figure out what to do in SF).

Re: We get the Nathan now!

(Whether you like it or not!)

Yup, I expect to be spending a lot of time on the googleshuttle. (Possibly even after I get a car -- commuting is for suckers.)
Tangent on that Prius thing - http://squidb0i.livejournal.com/70381.html

(found you by way of unseelie's journal)
verrrry interesting, thank you.
hey. adrienne said a friend of hers is looking to move back to the bay area from the east coast, and may be interested in finding a place w/someone. is this something you'd be interested in, or are you looking to move into an established household? either way, i can pass your info. along to her, in case she hears of anything.

xxxxx,
-s.
I appear to have a solid lead on a room at 22nd & Capp, but backup plans are always good. Please feel free to pass along.
Here by way of unseelie. If you need to find rental housing in San Francisco, I highly recommend <a href="http://www.metrorent.com</a>Metro Rent</a>. They're the site that found my girlfriend and I our last two places. They have a pretty good "try before you buy" thing going on, so you can get a very good idea of what you'd be getting if you paid them. Note, however, that if you want to live in The City so that you can spend time with your friends... the commute to and from Mountain View every day is kind of gruelling. I have a friend who works down there; despite him living only ten blocks away, I see him about two times a year. He's too tired after driving the freeway. I don't know what the solution to this problem is, but I figured I'd mention it.
I don't know what happened here. I was trying to post a hyperlink; maybe the new security stuff ate it? Or else I mistyped. Anyway, take a look at www.metrorent.com; they have rental housing listings, and a very good "try before you buy" offer that lets you see what you'd be paying for.

Also, beware of the commute from SF to Mountain View every day: it can really drain your time and energy, to the point that you never have enough of either to actually hang out with any of those friends you mention in The City.

I am harrassing you because of Sierra but Richard pointed me to this entry....

I may know someone who may be interested in a sublet in NY. I will whether that is a possibility the evening of the Feb 8th. I may also know something about a possible sublet- but it wouldn't go thru until June but it might help with having somewere to stay while you find somewhere to stay.

If you are determined to live in SF and commute to Mountain View I would second the car thing (you will figure it out as you commute the first week)- my understanding here (and for you sake I hope I am wrong) is that if you order a Prius the waiting time until you recieve your Prius is measured in years.

Luck with all of this.
